What is Masimo SafetyNet AlertUpdated 7 months ago

Reading time: 4 minutes, 8 seconds

Masimo SafetyNet Alert is a wireless, wearable monitoring and alert system that continuously tracks the user’s oxygen level and pulse rate. The device issues escalating alerts to the patient and their emergency contacts when a sudden change in oxygen level or pulse rate occurs, which can help to avoid critical health incidents.

Who can use Masimo SafetyNet Alert?

People who take prescription opioids for pain management may be at risk for slowed or stopped breathing, especially when they are asleep. Patients with health conditions that affect respiratory function (such as sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer) or other health conditions like obesity may also be more prone to oxygen desaturation events that can be dangerous to the brain and body.

Respiratory depression (hypoventilation) happens when the lungs don’t exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen efficiently. Carbon dioxide begins to build up in the body and breathing may become slower and shallower. Other symptoms of mild or moderate respiratory depression may include tiredness, daytime sleepiness, or shortness of breath. As respiratory depression becomes more severe and carbon dioxide levels rise within the body, additional symptoms such as bluish-coloured lips, fingers, or toes, confusion, or headaches can occur.

A person may be at higher risk of experiencing respiratory depression at home if they:

  • Combine opioids with alcohol or other medications or substances that restrict respiratory function, such as sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medication
  • Have opioid use disorder or a history of addiction
  • Are taking opioids for non-medical purposes
  • Are taking opioids again after stopping for an extended period of time
  • Have certain medical conditions, such as liver or lung diseases
  • Are older than 65 years of age

Masimo SafetyNet Alert is intended to be used for the continuous monitoring of functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin (the protein responsible for carrying oxygen to cells) and pulse rate.

How does Masimo SafetyNet Alert work?

Oxygen monitoring has been proven to assist in reducing the harm associated with opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) in the hospital. In a number of studies conducted over a decade with more than 100,000 participants, clinicians found zero opioid-related preventable deaths or brain damage in hospitalized patients who were monitored with Masimo SET® pulse oximetry and a notification system on an ongoing basis.

Masimo SET® pulse oximetry demonstrated significantly fewer false alarms and more true alarms than conventional pulse oximetry technologies in hospital settings and was proven to be accurate across all skin pigmentations. Masimo SafetyNet Alert uses the same clinically proven pulse oximetry technology to give patients peace of mind at home with reliable continuous oxygen level and pulse rate monitoring.

The device features a comfortable, lightweight fingertip sensor, which communicates wirelessly with Masimo SafetyNet Alert’s free mobile application to display data and trigger low oxygen alarms and notifications. Low oxygen level alerts are triggered when the user’s oxygen levels drop below Masimo SafetyNet Alert’s fixed thresholds.

When these events occur, the patient is initially alerted with audible alarms that sound on the Home Medical Hub and on their smartphone. If the patient’s condition persists or worsens, the system alerts the patient a second time and sends automatic texts to emergency contacts. Should the patient’s condition remain the same or decline after the second alert, the patient is alerted for a third time and texts are automatically sent to designated contacts again.

What is included with Masimo SafetyNet Alert?

Masimo SafetyNet Alert comes with:

  • Two easy-to-apply, disposable sensors to measure oxygen levels and pulse rate (each sensor lasts up to 96 hours — or up to seven consecutive nights — in typical continuous usage)
  • Access to a free, intuitive mobile app that displays data gathered from the sensor and triggers low oxygen alarms and notifications
  • 12 replacement tapes to attach the sensor to the user’s finger
  • Masimo Chip: a reusable chip that attaches to the sensor, communicating data via Bluetooth® to the Home Medical Hub
  • Home Medical Hub: a hub that sends sensor data to the secure Masimo SafetyNet Alert Cloud via Wi-Fi
  • A USB power adapter
  • A user guide and quick start instructions

The Masimo SafetyNet App is required for use and available on the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices. A smartphone equipped with Bluetooth® is necessary to use Masimo SafetyNet Alert. A Wi-Fi connection is also needed for the initial setup of the system and for monitoring. The Home Medical Hub must remain connected to Wi-Fi during monitoring for Masimo SafetyNet Alert to work properly.

It isn’t mandatory to choose emergency contacts to send alerts to from the Masimo SafetyNet App, but it is recommended. A text message invitation is sent to each emergency contact when they are designated in the app. The emergency contact can accept the invitation by responding with the code provided. Emergency contacts are alerted via SMS, meaning they don’t need to download the Masimo SafetyNet App to receive alerts.

Masimo SafetyNet Alert’s monitoring and notification systems may be beneficial to those who take prescription opioids or other sedating drugs, as well as those who have certain conditions (like asthma) that cause respiratory issues.
